David K.B. Cole was born on May 24, 1962 in Monrovia, Liberia and raised in Amherst, MA. In 1980 he matriculated to Williams College in Williamstown, MA. At Williams, Cole played Varsity Goal for the Ephmen and was also a founder of the Williams Black Alumni Network (WBAN), whose National Steering Committee he has since served on.
After earning a Fellowship from the Berkshire Museum and graduating from Williams in 1984 with a B.A. in Studio Art, he permanently relocated to New York City. Once there, Cole focused on developing his musical talents as a professional drummer by studying with Michael Carvin and working with Max Roach and Hilton Ruiz among others. David also continued to work as a professional artist, showing in New York City and Atlanta, GA.
September 1991 marked the beginning of a seven-year coaching tenure with Joe Espinosa Sports Club, a 500 member after school and summer sports program in NYC. As a Head Coach there, Cole oversaw the operations of the organization and instructed children in a number of sports, including ice and roller hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis and swimming. During the summers of 1997 and 1998 David reconnected with his former goalie coach, University of Maine Black Bear Head Ice Hockey Coach Shawn Walsh, and worked as a goalie and on ice instructor at the University of Maine Hockey School. More recently, he has worked as an instructor at Boston University and Elite Hockey Schools, while directing the Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Schools.
In August of 1998 Cole accepted the Fan Development Coordinator position with the Atlanta Thrashers Hockey Club and relocated to Atlanta, GA. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to Manager of Fan Development where he oversaw all of the Thrashers Fan Development Initiatives and staff. Then in June of 2001 the Tampa Bay Lightning hired him to be their Director of Fan Development. Since accepting the position, David Cole has helped grow hockey in the State of Florida from the grass roots up. His department runs year around street, inline and ice hockey clinics all over Florida, while Cole's goaltending expertise has led USA Hockey to employ him as a USA Hockey Coaching Seminar Instructor and a SE District Select U17 and U16 Coach. High School Hockey & Girls Hockey has been a major focus of his work. Over the past four years Cole has helped produce four Statewide Amateur Hockey Of Florida (SAHOF) High School State Championships, four Chicago Showcase teams, while coaching Team Florida U14 Girls, the Lady Eels, the Lady Jr. Lightning, Tampa Prep and the Tampa Bay Titans.
David is an Advanced USA Hockey Coach, a Level 3 Ice Hockey Official, SAHOF Director, past President of the Central Florida Ice Hockey Officials Association (CFIHOA) and a Member of the Williams College Executive Committee of the Society of Alumni. He lives in Brandon, FL with his wife Janet and daughter Marisa.
